Hi - I’m Robyn. I am new to the Somerville Design team, and I grew up in the 90s in the faux farmhouse era; beige, pastel bunnies and floral boarders wrapped the home, and every bathroom featured a lux carpeted toilet seat (gross). I was eager to archive that ‘style’ as I entered adulthood and throw away the key. After a few Pinterest boards and a half dozen walks through Ikea, I thought I was an expert. But as it turns out, I know nothing, and it takes more than a few accent pillows to design your dream home.

Principal Designer Yolande Somerville of Somerville Design knows what it takes to design the envy of the neighbourhood, and she is answering all my questions, from new and custom construction to renovations to style and trends, in this series of Ask the Designer.

We’re pleased to share our first entry of Ask the Designer. Since we’re not all natural Martha Stewarts, this series will open the world of Interior Design and give us a peak into the magic of Yolande Somerville, Principal Designer of Somerville Design.

Yolande has mastered her craft for over a decade and is passionate about her work. She has an eye for colour and speaks fluent design. Since Yolande is naturally reserved, getting her to be so candid took a little persuading.

Like all things, design included, you must trust the process.

Let's start with a big question.

Why should someone hire a professional interior designer?

Working with a designer is an investment that will yield myriad benefits. You get experience, creative and cohesive design, and someone with years of experience in your corner to help navigate things like space planning, negotiating contracts, and selecting finishes and products.

In your opinion, what makes a good designer?

A good designer is someone who gives a space a soul.

Where do you get inspiration when starting a new project, whether a new construction build or a renovation?

My inspiration comes from everywhere - Travel, nature, history.

Could you tell me 5 interesting things about you? Design-related or not.

5?? Oh gosh.... I love travelling, cooking, wine, sailing, and maybe adding that I’ve travelled to roughly 30+ countries.

What would you tell a new designer starting?

Travel to get design perspectives from other places and cultures. Get as much exposure as you can; volunteer, ask questions and be open to learning.

What is your favourite room to design?

I love a good kitchen - it is the home's heart. It’s a must for great space planning. Buuuuut, I also love ensuites - such a good opportunity to use lux finishes.

Do you have a least favourite?

NO! I love design; every space is an opportunity to create something beautiful.

What trend do you wish would/is sunset?

Grey - it’s been used and played out far too much over the past decade.

What is your favourite design era?

Art Deco
